Inaugural meeting for developing a business cluster in the field of building materials and construction

According to Michael Porter, a business cluster is a geographic concentration of interconnected businesses, suppliers, and associated institutions in a particular field. Clusters are considered to increase the productivity with which companies can compete, nationally and globally.

Within the framework of the project “Enterprise Europe Network Hellas 2015-2020”, Materials Industrial Research & Technology Development Centre S.A. (MIRTEC S.A.), the Hellenic technological centre, active in Applied Research, Technological Development, Certification and Quality Control in a wide range of materials and products, takes the initiative to set up a business cluster in the sector of building materials and construction. MIRTEC’s ambitious attempt is supported by RISE, the executives of which have remarkable, multiannual experience in the area of research and innovation, and hold valuable expertise on clustering in particular.

The meeting for the building materials and construction cluster took place on the 12th of July 2016 on the premises of MIRTEC in Thebes, with the participation of leading companies that are involved in the construction industry value chain, expected to form the nucleus of the cluster. The event was also attended by the consultants of the Deputy Minister of Education, who is responsible for issues concerning Research and Innovation, and by the Materials Platform Coordinator of the GSRT Directorate for Designing and Implementing Policies and Actions for Research and Innovation.

During the meeting, executives of MIRTEC and RISE depicted the current and future entrepreneurial environment, as well as the continually evolving need for innovative cooperative schemes, pinpointed examples of successful clusters operating on national and international scale, and presented the principal action axes of the nascent cluster. For a more effective ranking of the forthcoming actions, questionnaires were delivered to the companies’ representatives. The potential members assessed the existing possibilities and made further recommendations, contributing to the character determination of the emerging cluster, the mission of which is the enhancement of entrepreneurship in the construction sector.
